I left my kids with my husband and flew across the I left my kids with my husband and flew across the country for a solo vacation in Glacier National Park. When I go on trip I often look for takeaways. “How can I translate my trip into something that serves my artwork?”

My best friend of 21 years texted me months ago and said “hey come to this mom’s retreat with me.” I said yes.

My 11 month old still isn’t weened but I took the trip anyway. I met a whole bunch of new friends and had amazing conversations about motherhood, work, life, family, bodies, our challenges and resources.

I grew up in the north west and coming back to the lakes and the mountains will always bring me peace, joy, and excitement. I never miss the chance to go north.

We went to the rodeo. We went to farmers markets and tourist shops. I remember going huckleberry picking as a child so I obviously bought huckleberry everything (the ice cream and syrup are the best).

We hiked stunning trails and ended up at crystal clear lakes with colorful rainbow stone floors. I saw beautiful wildlife and a chipmunk even tried to come home with me.

We played mini golf, danced to live music and swam in lake McDonald. I wish I had more time to explore even more. But I know I’ll be back soon hopefully with my family in tow.

My big takeaways?
- It’s ok to rest and play and not translate everything back into my artwork.
- Solo travel is important to connect with yourself and take a break from parenting 24/7.
- My brain needs more rest than my body at this season of my life.
- Spend time with people who are not like you and you’ll probably find you’re a lot more a like than you might think if you’re willing to listen.
- Leave your phone in the other room for half a day.
- Be at peace with yourself and try to accept your changes instead of hating or resisting them. Find new love for yourself even when you feel far away from yourself.

Where should I go next?
