3 things I wish I knew about being an artist befor 3 things I wish I knew about being an artist before I launched my art career 10 years ago

- The Art World Ebbs and Flows
The art world changes seasonally but styles also change in terms of collector taste. Sometimes abstraction is hot, sometimes figurative work is hot. Staying true to myself, my style, and my themes are important. That doesn’t mean I can’t or wont change, but the fear of being left behind in a “hot” or not style isn’t as important as making the work I want to make.

- Collectors will Surprise You
You never know who will become a collector and more than a client relationship - many of my collectors I consider my friends. The opportunity to hear a collector’s story and how they connect with a painting is invaluable. I love hearing how a one of my paintings changed you, meant something to you, or helped you. I’ve had childhood friends that I haven’t spoken to in 20 years reach out and collect art. I’ve had literal rockstars and high profile celebrities collect art out of the blue. I’ve had friends of friends and acquaintances become close friends and repeat collectors. Collectors often become friends. I’ve gone to concerts, wine tastings and art shows with collectors and I’m thankful for each one.

- Making Art is Physical
I make my best artwork after having just gone for a run. My head is clear and I’m focused and energized after a run. Also having just had two children back to back I realize now more than ever how physically demanding making art is. I’m hauling around giant wooden frames. I’m on my hands and knees stretching art, I’m on my tip toes trying to reach the top of a canvas. Art making is a whole body activity and it’s ok to take a break when your body isn’t where it needs to be. (lol aka immediately postpartum)

What do you wish you knew about making art? #artistatwork

I’m learning that my studio practice is integral I’m learning that my studio practice is integrally tied to my exercise routine.

Before children I would go for a long run in the afternoon then spend hours in my studio late into the evenings.

I moved my treadmill into a corner of my studio last year. I walked on it here and there but hardly used it while in my second pregnancy. Now with 2 kids at home I watch the monitors while I run on my treadmill.

I did my 3 mile jog and at the end my babies were still napping and I compulsively let myself paint till they woke up.

Running sets me on fire and puts me in a flow state in my painting. I realize the pleasure of my painting practice is and always has been just as tied to my running practice.

I endeavor to enjoy more 2 hour blips of running and painting like this.

Pictured: today’s pour, monitoring 2 babies, the pour, my treadmill, one of the many daddy long legs that lives in my studio - I’m channeling my inner Louise Bourgeois and welcoming this “Maman” as I am in my mother years myself 💕

✌️stay sweet.
I gave birth to our son in mid-July. There are som I gave birth to our son in mid-July. There are some seasons of life that demand everything from you.
Every cell.
Every second.
Every inch.
Every ounce.
Every dollar.
Every breath.

This past month I have felt at my limit, physically and emotionally as I gave birth to an almost 10 pound baby at home and am learning how to parent 2 under 2. But after 1 month my head is finally above water. And things are smoother, easier, and we are getting a routine.

I’m eternally grateful for my husband @joelolmstead who has been by my side every second he could be for the last month. To my daughter for her resilience and for her gift of new art that she colored for us when brother was born.

I’m thankful for my birth team at @fairfax.home.birth and all they do to make me feel safe and in control and cared for. I’m thankful for my family and those who’ve shown us such love. I’m thankful for these first few weeks which are also so sweet and too fast.

Pictured: the fam, my daughter’s art added to the gallery wall, pinkies up and manicures.

Stay sweet ✌️
Almost a week late reflecting on Mother’s Day bu Almost a week late reflecting on Mother’s Day but last weekend I was enjoyed the actual day with my mother and swimming in the pool with my own baby.

As I’ve been mentally trying to wrap my mind around having a son I keep coming back to this piece I made for my girl. “A Girl Child” 30”x40” available

I’m soaking in the last few weeks with my girl before her little brother arrives and the feeling of being pierced through the heart swells up. Motherhood pierces us and there’s no undoing it. #piercedpainting #studioscenes #artistatwork
